Sensory Reference

The sensory reference of your brain is the means by which it determines the status of the body it is in, and the environment around it. Sensory reference data is the mind's link to the outside world, and to it's own self – the only means the mind has of determining the world around it.

As such, the sensory reference depends entirely on the senses – touch, taste, smell, sight, hearing, balance, proprioception. These senses feed data back to the brain – all the data it has, about everything outside of itself.

With various VR and prosthetic interface technologies you can take control of the sensory data the mind has access to. If your sight, your smell, your touch indicates you are standing in a room full of fragrant roses, overlooking the Eiffel tower in Paris, then that is where you are.

If the mirror reports you are an 18 year old blond girl with acne, or an 87 year old bald man with liver spots, then the mind, if its not used to this image, reaches the hands up to check. This is still just sensory data, and if subsumed in the same way, will reinforce the data the eyes present.

It doesn't matter if you are actually neither of these, and are located in a small room hooked up to a VR interface device that is delivering the sensory information. Your sensory reference says you are in that room in Paris, and your senses agree. Providing the simulation feels real, believable, your frame of reference places you there, as a form of eccentric projection.

Our perception of the world is driven by sensory input which is sent to our brains through sequences of spikes carried by sensory neurons, an incoming/outgoing "language of the brain". This book explores the way in which the nervous system represents or encodes these sensory signals.

Prevailing View of Brain's Sensory Processing System is Under Fire
Industry News

Industry news, originally posted on the first of July 2013, concerning the discovery that sensory data processed by the brain does not always follow the pathways it was shown to follow in the past. Specifically, signals often go through these areas, deeper into the brain, and the whole sensory processing model has been turned on its head.

Multiple Sensory Modalities Proven to Reinforce Each Other
Usually when we think of sensory input channels - sight, sound, touch, taste, smell, balance - we think of the traditional hierarchical order, under the brain. It seems that that hierarchy is not as cut and dried as we once thought, with interesting implications for virtual worlds.

Sensory Malfunction: Taste
A look at what taste is, as a sense, and the possible malfunctions - what can go wrong with the taste reaching the brain, attempting to explain in signal propogation terms. Intended to assist the creation of taste-based sensory systems for VR.
